Sunny and breezy skies opened this year’s Dave Cole Charity Golf Classic at the Stonewall Golf Club in Gainesville, VA. This is the 10th consecutive year that the Prince William office has coordinated this event-- whose name is in honor of Prince William County’s former Board Chair, Dave Cole. Deborah Campbell, Community Coordinator of the Prince William office, Golf Committee Chairman Anthony Mora and volunteer Anna May Davis were this year’s lead organizers. Numerous local paid and volunteer staff worked the day of the event to ensure its success. The tournament had nine major sponsors and received numerous donations and other sponsorships from companies that have established strong partnerships with the Red Cross throughout the years. There were approximately 100 golfers. BB&T won first place for the second year in a row. “It was a lot of fun! The feedback from the golfers, sponsors and volunteers was phenomenal,” said Karen Wayne, Community Executive of the Prince William and Loudoun County offices.
Anthony Mora from AOL has been the Chairman of the Golf Committee since 2006. Anthony is also a member of the Prince William County Leadership Council. “Anthony’s leadership continues to make this a fun event that sponsors and players look forward to, and indeed many sponsors have supported this tournament year after year. Anthony is a great ambassador for the Red Cross. He is always willing to share his Red Cross story and the importance of the work of the Red Cross in our community, across the country and around the world,” shared Karen Wayne.
At this year’s event, Anthony started his remarks with the following, “Close your eyes. Now think of each person in your family. Go through each of them.” After six seconds he asked everyone to open their eyes. He asked us whether we had actually been able to go through all of our family members. Then, he prompted us to think about the families in Alabama who were affected by the recent tornadoes. He said, “Some of them only had a six-second warning before the tornadoes hit, and were not able to get all family members to safety in time.” This was a poignant message. It encouraged people to think about the importance of disaster preparedness and response. It got people thinking about Red Cross’ mission.
